Weston Backwoods 163 Snowboard Review 2018-2019

Description

TESTER: Olaus Linn

BOARD: Weston Backwoods 163

OVERALL IMPRESSION FROM  1 TO 7:  5

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS BOARD?: The topsheet graphics are really killer – it turned heads everywhere I went with it.

WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS BOARD?: It wasn’t nearly as fun in kind of variable conditions as I thought it would be based on the shape.

OVERALL COMMENTS: Great pow board. I think you could have an absolute blast on this board with zero complaints on a bottomless day. It was fantastic making groomer turns too, although not quite as adept as some of the other boards I rode this year. The only bummer was the performance in the chop – it let me down a couple of times and I took some falls. I felt a little out of control at times.

RATE THE SHAPE FROM 1 TO 7:  6

SHAPE COMMENT: FUN TO LOOK AT

ADDITIONAL SHAPE COMMENTS:  I loved the look of the roundtail shape when I first saw it on the rack. Once I rode it I was wishing the sidecut were just a bit deeper to allow you to power through crud and not lose edge connection with the snow.

RATE THE FLEX FROM 1 TO 7:   5

FLEX COMMENT:  TOO STIFF

ADDITIONAL FLEX COMMENT:  It wasn’t the stiffest board I rode but still probably a bit stiffer than it really needed to be.

RATE STABILITY THROUGH TURNS FROM 1 TO 7:   6

STABILITY COMMENT: PRETTY GOOD

ADDITIONAL STABILITY COMMENTS: In pow and on the groomers this thing was a tank. In the chop it was squirrely.

RATE THE POP/ PLAYFULNESS FROM 1 TO 7:  5

COMMENT ON PLAYFULNESS:

ADDITIONAL COMMENT ON PLAYFULNESS:  Not exactly a playful board but it did have some nice pop overall.

RATE FLOAT IN POW FROM 1 TO 7:    RADICAL

COMMENT ON FLOAT IN POW: EFFORTLESSLY FLOATY

ADDITIONAL COMMENT ON FLOAT IN POW: Super fun pow turns – that’s where this board shined the most.

RATE THE GRAPHICS FROM 1 TO 7:  RADICAL

GRAPHICS COMMENT: AESTHETIC AND INSPIRING

ADDITIONAL GRAPHICS COMMENTS: Such a beautiful board. If I was rating the boards I rode by aesthetics alone this one would be a top contender.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAY: I thought the inserts were a little bit forward of where they should have been placed to really be able to ride this board well. I’m betting that’s indicative of how the flex pattern is set up too. More nose, less tail!
